Yaoundé, 31 December 2020- The Government of China, through the Chinese Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), has granted an amount of US $1,000,000 to help ensure the continuity of care and basic services provided to mothers, new-born and children. This project focuses on the provision of inputs aimed at providing quality essential services, prevention and management of COVID-19 cases.

In accordance with Cameroon’s national health development strategies, the support will be directed to 7 health districts in the East, Central and Littoral regions.

This project is the result of a solid partnership between UNICEF and the Government of China, as Jacques Boyer, UNICEF Representative in Cameroon attests: “China is one of UNICEF’s loyal partners and thanks to this project, critical health gaps in young children and women that could otherwise compromise their survival, development and well-being will be addressed”.

The funds recently paid by the Government of China will allow, among other things, the acquisition of inputs and materials for vaccination against Measles-Rubella (RR), the management of the deadliest diseases in children under 5 years, quality care for new-born babies in 20 health facilities. It will also involve acquiring personal protective equipment and treatment for Covid-19, equipment for the control and prevention of infections in communities and in health facilities. As Wang Yingwu, Chinese Ambassador to Cameroon, points out: “This is an opportunity to strengthen collaboration with UNICEF and continue to protect vulnerable Cameroonian children against Covid-19, as well as other diseases”.

The initiative will be implemented by the Government of Cameroon, in particular by the Ministry of Public Health through the directorates at the central level, regional delegations and health districts. The response is carried out in collaboration with other development partners (United Nations, international and local NGOs and community organizations).
